The problem: hours spent walking for water
Along the C13 corridor, families may spend hours each day walking long distances to find water, often along routes shared with wildlife or through unsafe terrain. That time and effort weighs especially on girls.
Our approach: rain harvesting at the home
Each Safe Home Water System is a 2,000 liter rain harvesting system with gutters, accessories and a water filter. Installation comes with education and hands on training, so families understand how to use and maintain the system.
What changes for a family
- Water for cooking, cleaning and drinking, with less dependency on distant sources.
- Time back, particularly for girls, for school and other activities.
- Food security: water at home lets families care for small gardens and support livestock, even in dry seasons.
- Health and dignity: consistent water supports hygiene and gives families control over a basic need.
"Now that I have the tank and I harvest rainwater for home use, my girls don't waste time going to the river to fetch water. They use that time in doing their holiday assignments and also revising for exams."Naimodu, rain harvesting system installed January 2023
Progress so far
- 24 families with solar lighting and rainwater harvesting systems, 2022 to 2023
- 1 orphanage serving more than 60 children with solar lighting and rainwater harvesting, 2026
"I used to think that the tanks only belonged to the rich, now that I have one then I take myself as rich. It also assists me in getting rainwater. Since I am old it saves me from fetching water from the river."Kokoo Parmuat, rain harvesting system installed August 2022
Part of a bigger journey
Water is one phase of the Self Reliance Journey. Paired with training and community participation, rain harvesting becomes a cornerstone of stability, supporting gardens, livestock and children's schooling.
