Why self reliance
The Self Reliance Initiative provides families with the basics of life and the means to create different income streams, so they can put food on the table and pay school fees for their own children. Families move from surviving to thriving, step by step.
Family Food Production System
Garden towers bring fresh vegetables within reach in a small space with minimal water, placed close to the home where families can tend them and keep them safe from livestock and wildlife. Many families are able to sell or share small surpluses with neighbors.
"Thank you for changing our lives. This project helped us very much in terms of getting daily kales."Normejooli, two garden towers installed December 2023
Community Poultry and Protein Production System
Secure chicken coops provide eggs for growing children and income from poultry sales. In many areas coops are run as small community co ops, and families are trained in feeding, hygiene and basic veterinary care.
Family Livestock and Income Generation System
Goats and cows provide milk and meat and serve as long term assets families can draw on during emergencies, school fee seasons or drought. Training in animal health, feeding and herd management helps families care for them for years.
