Why women and girls
In rural Kenya, collecting water and doing household chores after dark take time and energy that could go to school, rest or earning an income. Much of that burden is carried by women and older girls.
Time back, starting at home
- Water at home. Rain harvesting reduces the time and effort spent on water collection, particularly for girls, allowing participation in educational and economic activities.
- Light after dark. Solar lighting makes evening chores quicker and less dangerous for women and older girls, freeing time for rest, learning or income generating activities.
- Food close by. Garden towers next to the house improve family nutrition and reduce spending on purchased food.
Girls in school
Our Education Support Fund helps families with uniforms, books and fees so their sons and daughters can stay in school.
"Now that I have the tank and I harvest rainwater for home use, my girls don't waste time going to the river to fetch water."Naimodu, rain harvesting system installed January 2023
Building a better future
A mother is tending the garden and her small business. Eunice, orphaned at age 15, kept her sisters together and is now preparing to launch her own sewing business.
Led locally
Community representatives who live in the villages identify needs and priorities alongside local families, so support reflects what families want for themselves.
